She moved to the Detroit area in 1956, where she became a secretary in the Dearborn Heights School District. Her career spanned more than two decades, most of it at Eton Elementary, She was a life member of the Essex Golf and Country Club, in La Salle, Ontario, where she loved to golf. She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Lucien R. A service of: www.freep.com DEATH NOTICES GILLIS DUNCAN LEONARD A former mayor of Clawson, an avid gardener and horticulturalist, and for 30 years the owner of a flower shop In Clawson known as Duncanwyllo's, died peacefully on October 22nd at the Veteran's Home of California in Chula Vista. He was 79 years old. Born in Sydney Mines, Nova Scotia, on December 23,1924, Duncan immigrated with his family to the US when he was a boy.

At the age of 19, he became a US citizen in Paris, France while serving in the US Army, During WWII, he was in the 319th Ordnance Base Depot Company where he earned 2 bronze stars. Duncan settled in the city of Clawson. He was elected councilman for 8 years and served as the city's ninth mayor from 1959 to 1961. Along with his family and gardening, Duncan's other love was art. He mastered woodcarving and, until the onset of his illness this year, worked passionately toward his dream of building a desert hideaway.

Duncan was the second of 6 children born to Francis Gillis and Florence Macisaac. Surviving are one brother, Gorman (Teresa) Gillis of Livonia, Michigan, and one sister, Marilyn (Adam) Dabaldo, of Farmington Hills, MI. Two brothers, Francis "Leo" (Ellen) Gillis and John Gill (Lorna) Gillis, and one sister, Mary Wyllo (Thomas) Hughes preceded him in death. Duncan married Marie Garvin on 7 February 1948 and they had eight children: Marie Gillis (Ralph Caligiuri) of Golden, Colorado; Michael (Kim) Gillis, of Chelsea, Mi; Patrick Gillis, of Aurora, CO; Duncan L. Gillis, of Golden, CO; Mark Gillis, af Clawson, MI; Beth (John) Perrill, of Mendocino, California; Kemp Gillis, of Golden, CO; and Shawn (Lorie) Gillis, of Golden, CO.

Duncan also is survived by 15 grandchildren: Margo Caligiuri, Richard Fairley, Hannah Fairley, Bradley Nicoll, Andrew Gillis, Jeffrey Gillis, Andrew Perrill, Jacob Perrill, Nova Perrill, Eve Perrill, Kemp Gillis, Brienne Gillis, Kendall Gillis, Martella Gillis, Margaret Gillis, James Gillis, and many nieces and nephews.
