How do you use a wine rack for other than wine? ›

Good spots include integrated wine racks that are part of your fitted kitchen design, in a freestanding, purposely designed unit or a small rack that can be placed where you want it for ease of access. Ideally, they need to be stored slightly tilted and most definitely out of direct sunlight.

Wine racks allow you to store wine safely and conveniently in one location. The cork will stay wet if stored horizontally, which is vital to prevent drying and crumbling. There are plenty of different capacities and styles, including wooden, metal, plastic and more!

To rack, winemakers typically insert a stainless steel, wand-shaped device into the barrel. A friction-free pump, or in some cases gravity, is used to siphon the wine out. Winemakers then use a sight glass to observe and halt the process when the siphon starts to pull up sediment.

Wine racking is the process of transporting wine from one vessel to another, for example from tank to barrel. The main goal is to siphon the wine into another container, so you separate all the sediment from it. The leftover sediment is then left behind in the previous tank or barrel.

Store Bottles On Their Sides

For bottles with corks, be sure to store your wine horizontally in a wine rack. Keeping wine on its side helps keep the cork moist, which is key for long-term storage, as a dried out cork can cause seepage and premature aging.

If you don't rack your wine, you run the risk of getting some off-flavors, usually a result of the active yeast feeding on dead yeast cells and other nutrients in the wine (the gross lees.)

Wet or dry, a towel wrapped around your bottle will actually insulate it from cold freezer temps instead of speeding the cooling process, unless you happen to have a blast chiller… which you don't.

If the cork dries out, oxidization may occur, causing the wine to spoil. Storing wine on a horizontal wine rack also allows the sediment to settle and fall to the side of the bottle, which prevents spoilage. In addition to helping wine age gracefully, a horizontal wine rack looks beautiful.

After you open a bottle of wine, you expose it to oxygen. Some wines will become more expressive with that initial exposure, but after a while, all wines will fade. Oxygen will eventually cause any fresh fruit flavors to disappear and aromatics to flatten out.

A temperature between 45 – 65 degrees is ideal, with a humidity level of around 70 percent to help prevent the drying of the corks. Sunlight can damage the wine as well so it's important that the bottles remain out of direct sunlight.

Always store wine either horizontally or on a 45º angle with the cork facing down. The cork must remain wet and damp from the wine itself to maintain its structural integrity. This little storage trick keeps the wine secure from unwanted airflow.

The best place to store wine in a kitchen is in a cool, dark, and stable environment. It's best to avoid storing it near appliances that generate heat or in direct sunlight.
