it's a case that's divided boston. it's grabbed national headlines. ike ejiochi is back with the details. hey, ike. >> reporter: good morning, gio. monday will be a make or break moment for karen read. the judge is expected to decide if this case will be tried all over again despite a mistrial and several efforts from the defense team to throw the two charges against read levied. this morning, karen read headed back to court after a deadlocked boston area jury prompted a judge to declare a mistrial in the murder case of her police officer boyfriend, john o'keefe. >> folks, your service is complete. i'm declaring a mistrial. >> reporter: on monday, a new trial date could be scheduled for read as prosecutors plan to retry the case against her. >> we will not stop fighting. we have no quit. >> reporter: days after the mistrial was declared, read's defense attorneys filing a motion to dismiss two of the three charges against her claiming they were contacted by multiple jurors who said all 12

7:34 am

of them agreed unanimously that read was not guilty of second-degree murder and leaving the scene of an accident with injury or death, but those verdicts were never read in court and that a retrial on those counts would violate double jeopardy protections. >> for the defense, it would be a major win if they can get that murder charge dismissed, because it changes the type of case that the prosecution can argue. if karen read is no longer intentionally trying to kill john o'keefe, a lot of evidence may not make it in. >> reporter: in 2022, o'keefe was found dead in the snow outside of a home in canton, massachusetts. prosecutors say read intentionally backed into him with her lexus suv outside a party and left him for dead in the snow. >> i hit him. i hit him. i hit him. i hit him. those are the words of the defendant. >> reporter: read denying any wrongdoing, claiming she's the victim of corrupt police trying to cover up what she says was a fight that led to o'keefe dying at a party with his fellow officers.

7:35 am

the trial filled with fiery moments. the judge at one point scolding read. >> excuse me? this is funny, ms. read? all right. we're done. >> reporter: now this new trial moves forward, read's defense team will likely face the remaining charge the jury didn't address which is manslaughter while operating under the influence. it's possible she could be retried just for that charge. guys? >> rhiannon: all right, all eyes will be on that case. thank you, ike ejiochi. now it is time for the weather. leslie lopez from kabc is here with that. hey, leslie. >> leslie: good morning. we were talking about some interesting conditions, especially setting up from texas all the way up to the carolinas. take a look now over to asheville, north carolina. good morning to you. you're looking at some rainfall, some cloud coverage there, and of course, we were talking about a stationary front. it does not want to move. it's stalling out over texas by tomorrow, and that means tomorrow, there's going to be significant impacts in terms of rainfall. now that could create elevated flash flood risks through austin up to dallas. we were looking at several

but this new study is really interesting because it finds a link between eating a healthy prenatal diet and a lower risk of autism. >> dr. darien: this is important news. it's clear this is an association, but we don't yet know a cause and effect. so this study looked at mothers who stuck to a strict healthy diet. we're talking about whole grains, fish, vegetables, and low in red meat and low in processed foods, and they found that those mothers who stuck to that strict healthy diet had a 22% reduced likelihood of having a child with autism and a 24% reduced risk of a child with communication difficulty. although we see studies like this, this is an association, it does not define cause and effect. this diagnosis is very complicated, but it does believe having a diet low in processed foods will benefit us. >> whit: important information, and something else that has a lot of parents concerned is the impact of covid during pregnancy.

7:42 am

what more are we learning about that? >> dr. darien: another common question, do covid infections cause an increased risk of birth defects? they looked at 300,000 moms who had vaccinated in their first trimester and some who got naturally infected. there was no association with increased birth defects. this is still important to monitor, but it is important to note that covid infections alone did not increase pregnancy failure. during this covid surge, mask up and make sure you're being cautious. >> gio: i keep hearing about people who are getting covid now. the president has covid. what's the latest on the uptick? >> dr. darien: we're currently in a surge. we're seeing more people with cough, runny nose. is it as bad as what we were during the winter? absolutely not, but this is a time where we have to make sure we carry our masks during high-risk periods and especially if you are high risk, making

7:47 am

arike did that in this all-star game. she scored the most points ever in a wnba all-star game with 34, but get this. they were all in the second half. she came out in the third quarter and scored 21 points alone. she knocked down eight threes. she was absolutely on fire. in the basketball world, we call it she caught fire or she was on a heater. there was no answer for her. she had incredible confidence and her teammates kept giving her the ball so she could continue to set that record. it was an incredible performance from arike. >> gio: let's talk about the rookies. caitlin clark and angel reese, the competitors, and now they played together here. they played pretty well together, huh? >> you know, we have been saying that this game was, like, the get-along t-shirt for caitlin clark fans and angel reese fans. watch them on the same team because they're such incredible

competitors, and really the -- my favorite thing about these two players was they stuck to their strengths. caitlin clark with her incredible passing had ten assists in the all-star game, a rookie record, and angel reese who is the queen of double-doubles comes out in her first all-star game and has a double-double. they stuck to what they know. they had smiles on their faces the entire time. my favorite play was when caitlin clark comes off the screen and then hits angel reese with an assist. reese finished with the layup. they had a nice high five in that moment, watching those two compete. this right here, this play, a beautiful play. they come in high five each other. these are two players that hope to be on the olympic team together one day, and they show that our game is in incredible hands with those two coming into the league. >> rhiannon: i think we all hope that they both are on team usa one day, and this was an upset of team usa. they're about to head to paris. they have been in this same situation three years ago. they lost the all-star game, then went on the win gold. what do you think of the performance? any cause for panic? >> no.

7:49 am

there's no cause for panic because truly there is no better preparation game for this team usa than the wnba all-stars. you could argue that this wnba all-stars team could also go to the olympics. we have the most talented players in the world. so for team usa to go against the all-stars and the all-stars, they played with a sense of freedom. when i watched team usa, they have so much talent. they can use so many different lineups, but it's clear that they're still trying to learn their system, but there are going to be a lot of countries that play like they have nothing to lose, so this was a great test and a great lesson for team usa. lose the battle, win the war. i still think they have an incredible chance to go win an eighth straight gold medal. >> rhiannon: lose the battle, win the war. andraya carter, thank you so much. >> gio: you still sound great by the way. >> whit: yes, absolutely. >> thank you. >> rhiannon: coming up, get your sweet tooth ready, both of you. it is chilly with a chance of sprinkles.
