Any hours beyond 45 are considered excessive and will result in additional tuition charges.

30 Plus Hour Rule

This law states that a resident undergraduate student (one who pays in-state tuition) whose attempted semester hours exceeds by at least 30 hours the number required for completion of the degree program may be charged tuition at a higher rate.

Excess Hours: When an AWWS causes the number of scheduled work hours per pay period to exceed the 168 or 176 work hours designated for the pay period, the difference is called “excess hours.” Excess hours are credited at the close of the pay period, and therefore, cannot be used during the month they are earned.

A student becomes subject to the surcharge after exceeding the excess credit-hour threshold, which is the number of hours the Legislature determines to be excessive. This excess is calculated based on a percentage (ranging from 110–120 percent) beyond the number of hours the student's degree program requires.

This is known as the “30hr/45hr rule or excessive hours.” An average degree in TX is 120 completed hours. You may attend at your reduced tuition rate up to 30 hours above this number of attempted hours (150 hours total on most occasions).

Texas Education Code § 54.014 establishes a maximum number of semester credit hours an undergraduate student may attempt while paying Texas resident tuition. A student who exceeds the maximum hours will be charged the non-resident tuition rate.

In Texas, neither state nor federal laws impose limitations on working hours for most hourly employees. Consequently, non-exempt hourly employees aged 16 and above can work any number of hours per day or week.

Hourly student employees are limited to 25 hours per week during the fall and spring semesters. They can work up to 40 hours per week during breaks.
